While copying files over local area network you might consider turning off compression in rsync as it will bottleneck one of the CPUs at either end. In my example below I was copying from a Core i5 @2.3 MacBook Pro to a Core i7 Linux over a 1Gbps connection and I had this results:
$> rsync -av --progress firstname.lastname@example.org:/path/to/dir/ . - average speed 22MB/s
$> rsync -av --compress-level=0 --progress email@example.com:/path/to/dir/ . - average speed 90MB/s
As you can see with compression off I achieved 4x the speed than using default compression.
